Sweet Bobby Netflix Banner

So, what’s catfishing? Well it’s  the act of creating a fake identity online to deceive someone, it’s something that has become a prevalent issue in the digital age. The issue got highlighted again through Netflix’s documentary “Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare” which sheds light on one of the most shocking catfishing cases, where Kirat Assi was deceived for nearly a decade by her cousin, Simran Bhogal, who posed as a fictitious romantic partner named Bobby Jandu. The weird thing is, when I first saw the banner for the documentary I said to myself, “she looks familiar” and that’s when I realised I’d worked alongside Kirat over a decade ago at the the original Asian FX radio station, a spin off of Panjab Radio.

Getting back on to topic, it’s because of the danger of catfishing that we attempt to verify single Sikh profiles as best we can before approving them. But this article explores the lessons we can learn from this harrowing story to avoid falling victim to similar schemes.

Key Lesson to Avoid Catfishing

1. Verify Dating Profile Identities:

Even though we perform an initial check, always verify the identity of people you meet online. Use video calls to confirm they are who they claim to be. If someone consistently avoids video calls or in-person meetings, it could be a red flag.

2. Be Skeptical of dating Profiles that are perfect:

If someone’s story appears too perfect or their attention seems overwhelming, it’s wise to step back and critically assess the situation. Catfishers frequently craft idealised personas to entice their victims.

3. Check Social Media Profiles:

Look for inconsistencies in their social media presence. Genuine profiles usually have a history of posts, interactions with friends, and tagged photos. Don’t just look at Facebook and Insta, check their LinkedIn history. Sparse or newly created profiles can be suspicious.

4. Trust Your Instincts:

If something feels off, trust your gut. Kirat had moments of doubt but was reassured by the elaborate lies her cousin told. Listening to your instincts can help you avoid prolonged deception.

5. Seek External Opinions:

Discuss your online relationships with trusted friends or family members. They can provide an objective perspective and may notice red flags that you might overlook.

The Impact of Catfishing

The emotional toll of catfishing can be devastating. Victims often experience feelings of betrayal, embarrassment, and mistrust. Kirat’s story highlights the deep personal harm that can result from such deception. It’s crucial to remember that catfishing is not just an online prank; it can have serious real-world consequences.

Legal and Social Implications

While catfishing itself is not illegal, the actions taken by catfishers can lead to legal consequences, such as fraud or harassment charges. Kirat pursued civil action against Simran, resulting in a private apology and a payout. This situation highlights the necessity for more robust legal safeguards to combat online deception.

Catfishing Conclusion

The case of “Sweet Bobby” highlights the potential perils of online relationships and underscores the need for vigilance. By actively verifying identities, trusting our instincts, and soliciting external advice, we can safeguard ourselves against the deceit of catfishing. It’s crucial to remember that online safety demands both alertness and prudence.
